1:1 Financial Coaching


SUMMER ANNOUNCEMENT: Coaching appointments closed and will reopen Nov 27 2018!  


Mind Over Money’s 1:1 financial coaching program provides students with the opportunity to share their personal financial circumstance with university-trusted individuals and explore ideas and build skills.

Students interested in meeting with a coach should read the Coaching Overview and the Financial Coach Bios below, and then submit a Coaching Request Form. Mind Over Money staff will strive to connect all students with a coach within the term in which the request is made. However, students should keep in mind that this is a pilot program and we cannot guarantee that we will have a coach available for every student who requests a meeting.

Coaching Overview

A coach provides 1) a structure for students to develop their own solutions and 2) guidance toward resources and behaviors that will increase students’ success in reaching their goals. Financial coaching strives to help students develop skills and behaviors they can improve upon independently over time.

Financial Coach Bios  
Pat Bowe graduated from Stanford in 2008 with a major in International Relations and a minor in Spanish. He was also on the football team as a tight end. Upon graduation Pat worked for Deloitte Consulting in the Strategy & Operations practice as a management consultant for four years before earning his MBA at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern. After graduating from the full time two year program in 2014 Pat went to work for Cargill where he remains today. He worked in Cargill's Corporate Strategy & Development group on Strategy projects as well as Mergers & Acquisitions, Divestitures, Joint Ventures, and Equity Investments. Pat is now a Business Development Manager in Cargill’s BioIndustrials group. Pat is happy to help think through questions regarding personal finances, student loans, career path, etc. and is an open book on any area of need.  
Mark Constant has served as the SVP, Corporate Finance & Treasury for Franklin Templeton Investments for more than 10 years, but has been a grateful beneficiary of his Stanford experience for more than 30 years! He began his life-long personal financial education delivering newspapers door-to-door when he was 10, and started putting it to good use when he arrived on campus for pre-Freshman Orientation wrestling practices, knowing zero people in California, aside from his new coach. Although he is now responsible for an $18 billion Balance Sheet, he found maximizing Financial Aid resources more challenging, and has enjoyed “returning the favor” as often as possible (including as a guest of the Graduate School of Business, speaking to various investment-related topics, for more than 10 years).  
Jeff Edwards has been involved in a broad spectrum of financial services roles over his career including investment management, investment banking, and strategic finance. He believes that financial literacy is life long skill and the sooner you can begin your learning journey the better. He certainly wishes he had started his own education process on the topic much earlier. A member of the Class of '06, Jeff studied Political Science and was a member of the football program during his time on The Farm.  
Lisa Ewan currently manages Stanford's Department of Psychology and has worked at the university for approximately 20 years in various finance and administrative roles. Her areas of interest and expertise include finance, budgeting, and accounting, as well as coaching, developing and mentoring students and other staff. Lisa has worked with students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels providing information, resources, and advice to help plan for the future and to solve problems. She currently mentors local at-risk high school students and coaches other Stanford managers. Lisa’s history includes being a first-generation college graduate coming from a low socioeconomic background, and she is proud of her Mexican heritage.  
Jeanine Hansen believes early knowledge of credit score development, retirement savings, and good debt options available will help put students in a better financial position in life. Jeanine has been in banking for over 35 years, with 24 years at Stanford Federal Credit Union where she has gained financial knowledge that she loves to share with others. She is a college graduate and has raised two credit savvy kids - a 25 year old college grad and a 22 year old college student who will graduate this June. Her two kids enjoy teasing her that they have better credit scores than she does. Jeanine wants to help students gain knowledge and make plans for healthy financial behaviors to help them maintain financial wellness.    
Lucy LaPier has been interested in finance since her first job out of college, working on a trading floor. This led to an MBA and work as an investment banker in NYC. After a move to California, she came to work at Stanford, working in a number of jobs including at the law school, in finance, student services for international students and in the Office of the Vice Provost for Teaching and Learning (VPTL). As someone who put herself through undergrad and grad school, she would be glad to help Stanford students with their financial questions and plans.  
Anh Nguyen strongly believes that personal finance is a powerful tool to help people live the life that they want. With Stanford for 20 years, she is currently a Finance Manager for Philosophy and Religious Studies Depts. Prior to Stanford, she spent 8 years with Wells Fargo Bank and held various positions at retail branches. Anh was a teenager when she came to the US as refugee. She wants to help students to understand their financial needs and to practice healthy financial behaviors.  
David Olson earned an engineering undergraduate degree and later, after working 3 years, an MBA. He enjoys connecting with and mentoring students in whatever way is most helpful. David looks forward to helping students learn about managing money in any way whether it be budgeting, money management, investing or other.  
Dennis Peterson worked for Morgan Stanley for 38 years helping individuals understand and navigate their financial paths before retiring in 2017. It was very fulfilling for Dennis to assist these individuals to practice healthy financial behavior which in turn allowed them to achieve their goals. Personal finance allowed Dennis to attend Stanford where he completed his undergraduate degree in 1973 and a masters degree in Education in 1976. As a walk on student athlete in football and without financial aid his first two years, Dennis needed student loans to pay for tuition and worked during the school year as well as every summer to pay for room and board. Personal finance has always been very important to Dennis.  
Rick Ruvkun, graduated from Stanford and lives in New York City. He has spent the past decade of his 35-year career as a Director of Equity Research and as an equity portfolio manager at Lord Abbett. His entire career was in managing equities for clients. He has an engineering degree from Stanford and a Masters in Management from the MIT Sloan School of Management. For the past five years, he has volunteered and taught an annual seminar on financial literacy to post-graduate physicians at Columbia University. He is a trained volunteer assisting in the preparation of tax returns for lower income residents of New York City. He also volunteers in financial literacy, mentoring college and graduate students, and math literacy for immigrant high school and high school equivalency diploma students. Rick is the Treasurer of Central Queens Academy, a charter school in NYC. Rick welcomes the opportunity to help students achieve their financial objectives and create a framework for money decisions.  
Valdemar Sandoval is a Branch Manager for Stanford Federal Credit Union at the Tresidder Union branch located within Stanford University. He also currently manages Stanford Federal Credit Union’s MobiCU, a vehicle that brings the Credit Union to the Palo Alto community like Google, SAP, VMware and Stanford Health Services to name a few. Valdemar has over 15 years of experience within the banking industry, starting as a teller and working his way up to Branch Manager over that time. His role allows him to help with financial education to people who are looking to reach their financial goals in a clear and sound manor. Valdemar was raised in Mountain View and now lives in Santa Clara with his wife and his energetic 2 year old son.  
Kelly Takahashi believes that personal finance is a powerful tool to help folks live the life they want. With Stanford for 9 years, she is a Senior Financial Analyst with Student Financial Services and the Director of the Mind Over Money Program. Prior to Stanford, she spent 13 years as a business lender with Union Bank, leaving her with a practical education in business management and planning. Kelly was a first generation college student and wants to help students make plans to reach their goals, set themselves up to practice healthy financial behaviors, and reduce daily financial stress.  
Juan Vargas has been in the Banking industry for the last 10 years. His experience includes working with big banks as well as member-owned credit unions as a teller, personal banker, credit analyst, and currently a Relationship Manager for a local credit union. Juan wants to help the student community by providing them with guidance without making anyone feel embarrassed of any situation, and while reducing financial stress. Juan is bilingual and has lived in 2 different countries, 3 different states, and 6 different cities. he considers himself to be very open-minded with varied audiences.  
Art Varnado has 30 years of experience working in the financial sector in investment banking (public finance) and currently works in investment management. He has worked for T. Rowe Price Associates for 21 years and is a Fixed Income Product Manager. He earned a BS in Industrial Engineering and an MBA from Stanford. Art is interested in helping students understand the intricacies of personal finance and explain things in a way that is straightforward and easy to understand. Raising three young adults of his own, Art hopes his personal and professional experience will be useful to Stanford students.
 
Jeffrey K. Wong has experience with different phases of personal financial matters, including his own as an undergraduate and graduate student. He believes that having a solid foundation of personal money management skills is one of the most important skills a student can learn, both during and after their collegiate phase. Jeff currently works as the Finance Manager for the Psychology Department. Through his contacts with Psychology students and postdocs, he has learned about some of the financial challenges they face while attending Stanford. Jeff has a desire to help students and postdocs throughout Stanford with their personal financial challenges, so they can more thoroughly enjoy their academic experience.  
Steven Wright graduated in 2008 from Stanford University where he majored in Economics and played varsity water polo. After working in corporate finance in the Bay Area for several years, Steven joined the Stanford Management Company, the entity that manages the University’s endowment, where he works on the investment team across asset classes and geographies. Steven earned his Chartered Financial Analyst designation in 2017. Steven is passionate about personal finance, investing, and economics, and loves helping others gain comfort with these topics.
